Apple Accelerates Satellite Internet Ecological Expansion Plan to Develop New Satellite Functions for iPhone
According to media reports, Apple is quietly developing a series of new satellite connectivity features, allowing iPhones and some Apple Watches to achieve richer offline operations in a cellular free environment.
According to informed sources, the features being developed include offline map loading, image transfer, and third-party service access.
Starting from 2022, Apple will gradually launch satellite services such as "Emergency SOS," "Road Rescue," and "Offline SMS," which are still free for all users. If the new feature is successfully implemented, it will further expand the application of iPhone in scenarios such as hiking, ocean navigation, and remote work.
Similar to the initial goals of products such as Apple Watch and Vision Pro, Apple's initial plan was extremely aggressive - attempting to connect the iPhone directly to satellites, completely bypassing telecom operators. But as the commercialization process advances, the ultimately implemented functions tend to be practical.
In 2022, Apple will launch the emergency SOS satellite contact feature for the first time on the iPhone 14; In 2023, we will collaborate with a third party to launch satellite based road rescue services. In recent updates, iPhone's satellite SMS is no longer limited to emergency use.
The current service relies on Globalstar's satellite network for implementation. Due to the aging of the company's satellites, Apple has invested an additional $1 billion to help update its equipment. However, Globalstar is currently seeking a sale, and SpaceX is seen as the most likely acquirer.
In the future, Apple hopes that the iPhone can maintain satellite connectivity in a "natural use" state, even if the device is placed in a pocket, in a car, or even indoors. At present, the system still requires users to aim their devices at the sky in an unobstructed environment.
It is worth noting that SpaceX has taken into account compatibility with Apple devices when designing the new generation of satellites, specifically adding support for the existing wireless spectrum of the iPhone. If the acquisition is completed, the cooperation with SpaceX will help Apple accelerate the deployment of its satellite business and make the collaboration between Cook and Musk a natural move.
